Lender’s® Bagels Rocks (and Rolls) Mattoon At the 23rd Annual Bagelfest!
The Bagel Capital of the United States Celebrates the World’s BEST Bagel
Thursday, July 17th - Saturday, July 19th
MOUNTAIN LAKES, NJ (July 2008) — The mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked, crunchy-on-the-outside, chewy on the inside bagels fills the air once again as Peterson Park turns into a three-day bagel bonanza for the 23rd annual Lender’s Bagelfest! Mattoon, Illinois, home of the world’s largest bagel factory—Lender’s Bagels, to be exact—will once again be the scene of this year’s festivities, and with a Rock ‘n Roll theme it’s sure to be the best yet. In addition to the carnival, Bagel Breakfast, local food and craft vendors, sensational musical acts, Bagelfest Parade and more, Lender’s will be sampling exciting, new products for the first time ever at the Lender’s booth from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. so stop by and be the first to try them out!
80 years ago, Harry Lender opened his first 800-square-foot bagel bakery on the east coast. In 1962, the father of the frozen bagels brought the popular New York food staple to the Midwest, and Mattoon. Now, Lender’s Bagels, who started the bagel phenomenon in America, is owned by Pinnacle Foods Group LLC., a company that has stayed true to the tradition of Lender’s while adding flavorful and healthful alternatives in the frozen, refrigerated, and fresh sections of the supermarket.
Murray Lender began hosting Bagelfest in July 1986, and Lender’s has carried on the tradition every July in Mattoon for 23 years. Some 40,000 people show up for the weekend-long event, many of whom literally line up out the door every Bagelfest Saturday morning to enjoy the largest free bagel breakfast in the world and devour nearly 30,000 bagels! This year’s Bagelfest celebrates Lender’s 81st year in America, and everyone is invited to visit the official Lender’s Bagel booth on Saturday, July 19th to enjoy free bagels and coupons, participate in the Lender’s Bagel Toss, win awesome prizes and more!
“Not only is this an event known throughout the nation, but Bagelfest is a time when local families and friends can gather together to enjoy part of our town’s rich history and have a lot of fun while they’re at it!” said Bagelfest Coordinator Angelia Burgett. “From Bingo to Beer Tents to the Bagel Toss, to the ever-popular free Bagel Breakfast, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Bagelfest,” Burgett added.
“Consumer demand is the heartbeat of Lender’s Bagels, and we aim to please,” said Ray O’Brien, Vice President, Lender’s Bagels. “For more than 80 years, Lender’s has been setting industry standards and Bagelfest provides us with an opportunity to reach out to one of the most bagel-savvy communities in the country and find out what they want, and that’s really exciting for us,” O’Brien added.
The folks bringing you the Bagelfest have gathered together not only America’s favorite foods, but amazing musical guests for some fantastic entertainment, as well! Don’t miss local favorites The Blue Suede Crew featuring Scott Wattles and The Smashband on the Main Stage Friday night at 8:00 p.m., and be sure to catch national country sensations Keith Anderson and Ashton Shepherd as they take the Main Stage Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Other acts featured throughout the course of the event include X*Crush and The Jackson Ave. Band.
